After graduating from the University of
Michigan with a degree in English Literature in 1993, Jocelyn was not sure
what she wanted to do in life, so she traveled. She first went to Europe
for a short six week trip, then returned to her waitressing job in Ann
Arbor for another year. In October of 1994 she left on a year long trip to
Australia and New Zealand spending roughly six months in each country. She
then returned to her home town of Kalamazoo, Michigan. In February 1997
she left for a three month camping trip in Africa (Kenya to South Africa).
In April of 1997 she acquired a spinal cord injury while sledding down a
sand dune in Namibia. Having done her
rehabilitation in Grand Rapids, MI, Jocelyn decided it would be the best
place to live. In October 1997 she got a part-time job at a local bookstore.
Her first taste of advocacy was when the local movie theaters were
converting to stadium seating. She wanted to make sure their plans were to
not put the accessible seating in the front row. |
