Jocelyn Dettloff: Ms. Wheelchair Michigan

After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in English Literature in 1993, Jocelyn was not sure what she wanted to do in life, so she traveled. She first went to Europe for a short six week trip, then returned to her waitressing job in Ann Arbor for another year. In October of 1994 she left on a year long trip to Australia and New Zealand spending roughly six months in each country. She then returned to her home town of Kalamazoo, Michigan. In February 1997 she left for a three month camping trip in Africa (Kenya to South Africa). In April of 1997 she acquired a spinal cord injury while sledding down a sand dune in Namibia.

Having done her rehabilitation in Grand Rapids, MI, Jocelyn decided it would be the best place to live. In October 1997 she got a part-time job at a local bookstore. Her first taste of advocacy was when the local movie theaters were converting to stadium seating. She wanted to make sure their plans were to not put the accessible seating in the front row.

She contacted the local Center for Independent Living for some assistance, then started volunteering for the Center. In March of 2000, she went to work full-time and through the years has moved from an entry level position to Development Director to Resource Development Team Leader. In addition to her professional life, Jocelyn has remained active in sports, such as water skiing, downhill skiing and wheelchair tennis. Tennis has given Jocelyn the opportunity to travel and meet hundreds of people who live their lives with their disabilities.

It was an honor to have been named Ms. Wheelchair Michigan 2005. I look forward to traveling to different locations around the state and talk to people about overcoming the negative stereotypes associated with disability. Going to the National pageant in July will be a wonderful opportunity to meet women who use wheelchairs and have accomplished great things. I think back to eight years ago when I acquired my spinal cord injury and never did I imagine something so wonderful.
