Monica S. German: Ms. Wheelchair South Dakota, 2003

A short summary of Monica  . . .

Hello, my name is Monica German and I have the awesome privilege of serving as Ms. Wheelchair South Dakota 2003.

I am a mom, friend, piano teacher, medical transcriptionist and volunteer.
I have a BA from Huron University and have just started working toward a Master's degree in Education.

When I was 19-years-old, I was diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, a disease that progressively weakens muscles in my shoulders, legs and hip areas. I started using a manual wheelchair about 10 years ago and for the past two years have enjoyed the freedom that comes with using an electric wheelchair and lift van.

I spend my time cross-stitching and volunteering--with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and at my church, Central Baptist Church, where I am involved in Children's Ministries, the Singles' Ministry and other ministries. I love communicating with my family and friends -- mostly on the phone or by email.

Next July 22-26, 2003, I will be representing South Dakota in the Ms. Wheelchair America Pageant in Des Moines, Iowa. I am also available for public appearances, such as speaking and other events. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance to you.

Monica and sonA special thanks . . .

I would like to thank the many whose support has meant the world to me. First and foremost, is the Lord Jesus Christ, as it is from Him I draw my strength and joy. He has placed many people in my path to encourage, exhort, and support me throughout my life. The first support group I have is, of course, my family: my mom, step-father, sisters, brothers, their spouses, nieces, nephews, former in-laws, and the most important man in my life, my son. Three of my sisters, one brother and two nieces also have MD, so they share many of the same experiences I do. My brother has participated in the gene therapy through the Muscular Dystrophy Association to further the research progress. God has also put me in churches who have prayed and helped with whatever needed to be done to help me physically. Another source of encouragement would be my friends. Without their servant hearts and strong muscles I would not be able to participate in many things, such as tubing down a river, camping, going to events in other people's houses, riding shotgun in a vehicle other than my van, etc. My co-workers did much on a daily basis (getting me drinks, warming lunch, helping with my coat). A special thanks to my roommate, Ruth, as she gets stuck with the mundane things in life, like laundry, dishes, meals, etc. Strangers have been most willing to help with doors, picking things up when I drop them and assisting me when I need help.

To each of my family members, friends and strangers who have helped me in the past, and to those who will help me in the future...
BLESS YOU and THANK YOU!

Monica S. German
