Ms. Wheelchair Nebraska 2006

I have had a wonderful time as MWNE this year! Here is how I
have been spending some of my time: I have spoken at the University of
Nebraska at Kearney a couple of times, a retirement home, a church here in
Lincoln, I'm getting ready to go to an Elementary school in Kearney, NE next
week and will spend time in the music class. I have made appearances at
different public functions and sporting events. I also play my flute when I
go and speak, which is pretty fun! |

Christmas Eve my Mother and I made some goodies and
delivered them to a fire station here in Lincoln. We also got to spend time
getting to know the firefighters there and we received a tour, even of the
inside of the fire engine! At the end of March, the Ms. Wheelchair Nebraska
Program put on a fundraiser, including a silent auction.
Well, now I have the opportunity of participating in the
Ms. Wheelchair America Pageant! I can't wait! It will be so much fun meeting
all the women, sharing stories and learning of their adventures.

I was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa and grew up here in
Lincoln, NE, where my family and I still reside. I graduated from the
University of Nebraska at Kearney in December of 2004, with a major in
Elementary Education and a minor in Elementary Music Education. Right now I am working for the College Savings Plan of
Nebraska as a Customer Service Representative and
I substitute teach a little on the side.

My hobbies and interests include: Listening to music (all
kinds), dancing, watching movies (anything as well as Classic Movies),
playing my flute, hanging out with my friends and family, enjoying the
outdoors (camping, nature rolling and snow skiing), trying new things and meeting new people. |

Here is a little background on my disability. I was
involved in a severe car accident March of 1985, when I was only 3 and a
half. My father was killed instantly. My mom was unconscious for three weeks
and they thought she would end up with brain damage. Although there were no
long term effects, her jaw was found out of its socket and the right side of
her face was completely damaged. They had to perform plastic surgery to
reconstruct it and she lost feeling in that side of her face. |
|
My sister was discharged from the hospital within three
days to stay with my aunt. The results of the accident left me a T-3,4
paraplegic. I was hospitalized for 3 months and was sent to the Shepherd
Spinal Chord Clinic in Atlanta, GA for 2 months. My mom, sister and I
reunited that August and returned to our home in Lincoln, NE.
This great challenge has helped us to become stronger as a
family and realize what is really important in life.
