More about Shonnae Lundy

My name is Shonnae Lundy I live in the Des Moines area. I will be representing Iowa in Ms. Wheelchair America in New York in July, 2005. I am very excited to meet all the contestants.

I am a single mother of two and a grandmother of four. I have two sisters. Kathy lives in Denver, NC and Claudia lives in Des Moines. I have one brother Jessee he lives in Port St Lucie.

In 1988 I was in a car accident and it left me a paraplegic. It hasn’t always been easy. You have a choice. You can sit in the dark or go towards the light. A day without a smile is a day wasted.

I work at Central Iowa Center for Independent Living. I teach a class in living a healthier Life With a Disability. LWD was developed by researchers at the University of Montana. Iowa started early in 2000. It is a 8-week curriculum alone. It is 9 chapters of setting goals, solving problems, beating the blues, health, communication, seeking information, activity, eating well and systems advocacy. LWD is improving the quality of your life, being safe, self-esteem and disability pride.

I have my own business, LWC (living with choices): performing daily living tasks and reaching goals. I have been a travel agent, I’ve been in day care and enjoyed all of them.

I am on the board of Des Moines housing for the disability. I did my first lobbying last year. I will be working with Iowa lawmakers to introduce legislation to better regulate how the handicapped permits are handed out and raise fines to $500. My goal is to change the permits to match up with your licensed plate number on your car. If you don’t drive and your are a passenger you will have an ID number that match up with your permit. I have a record in voting rights, transportation, housing in pubic awareness and I volunteer for the paralyzed veterans of Iowa.

My hobbies include the following: Traveling, country music and oldies. I collect guitar picks, Elvis Presley Xmas mini jukeboxes, old postcards, autographs and antiques. I also like old movies.

I would like to do some wheelchair modeling in the future.

I love spending time with my grandkids and my family and friends.
