Photo information

Melissa Milinovich is a 26-year old woman from Amelia, Ohio who is currently reigning as Ms Wheelchair Ohio 2005. She was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a form of Muscular Dystrophy, at the age of 2 but has never let that stop her. She graduated with honors from Wright State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Business in 2000 and has been on the fast-track ever since. From being a career woman with the Hewlett Packard Company to a wife, Melissa strives to reach the high goals she has set for herself and never allows anyone to tell her she can't do something.

Despite using a wheelchair for mobility, she lives a very fulfilling life and encourages others to do the same.

Her platform, entitled "Empower Yourself: It Only Takes One Person to Make a Difference," focuses on showing people with disabilities that they have the power to change their circumstances for the better if they set their mind to it. She is actively involved with her community on a local and state level, working on issues that directly affect those living with disabilities.

Some of her groups and activities include:

  • Muscular Dystrophy Association
  • Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy Support Inc.
  • Mentor to young girls with various disabilities
  • Learning how to be a Service Dog Trainer

On a personal level, Melissa has been happily married to James for almost 2 years and is looking  forward to the next 50. They have two cats named Sydney and Malibu, as well as a dog named Kegan. Kegan is currently being trained by Melissa and James to be a service dog for Melissa. They just moved into a house they had specially built to accommodate Melissa's needs and hope to have 1-2 children in the future. In her free time, Melissa spends her time playing games on the internet, writing horror/suspense stories, hanging out with friends, collecting unicorns, and playing with Kegan outside.

Melissa is very excited about her title and is looking forward to meeting all the other women at the Ms Wheelchair America conference. She feels this is a great opportunity to meet other women who are trying to accomplish the same things she is: advocating and changing things for the better for those who live with a disability.
