I would like to take this opportunity to
introduce myself to you in my new role as Miss Wheelchair Minnesota. My
name is Katie Wornson and I am deeply committed to the goals of this
organization to educate the public about the abilities of those with
disabilities. I am thrilled to accept the challenge and responsibility of
illustrating to the public that being in a wheelchair is just life as
usual, as fulfilling and frustrating for someone in a chair as for anyone
else. First, let me tell you something about myself. I am 23 years old and have
had Cerebral Palsy from birth. I am a single mom with a healthy active
three year old, a full time student majoring in Human Services at
Minneapolis Community and Technical College, a part time employee of the
Student Access Center which serves students with all types of
disabilities, and in my abundant spare time, I am the volunteer
coordinator of my college’s Mentor Expo program. |

I also participate in a demanding physical fitness program twice a week at
Courage Center, so that I can make the most of my abilities.
As MWM, I hope to be a visible advocate for all individuals with
disabilities and to illustrate to everyone that just because you are in a
wheelchair, does not mean that you can’t do what other people can. Of course, I also hope to make all of
the people in my life, my family, friends and community proud of the
encouragement and support they have always given me.
I need to ask your help in achieving these goals. As you might suspect in
the current economic climate, there is little funding for the work that I
will be expected to do as MWM. I am required to raise the funds necessary
for my travel throughout the state for official engagements, as well as the
national competition in Albany, New York. The total amount that I must
raise is $2500.00. Because I have stepped into this role late, the time
that I have to raise these funds is very short. I want to assure you that any
donation, large or small, will be greatly appreciated and put to good use. I
will be happy to visit any group or organization and speak about my work,
whether or not you are able to contribute. I hope everyone will remember
that anyone can acquire a disability at any time. The most important part
of my job as MWM, is to remind people, both with a physical limitation and
those without, that life is challenging, fulfilling and a wonderful
experience when the dignity of each individual is measured by who they are,
rather than by what they can or cannot do.
